LattéLife DOUBLE STANDARDS EXPRESSED

DOUBLE STANDARDS EXPRESSED
Editorial by Adam Greenwood

Back in 2020, LattéLife exposed a local developer for paying for the advertising costs of a candidate in the 2016 elections (see attached picture).
Not only is this a big no-no, the candidate (who went on to be elected to council) failed to declare the developer’s donation to his campaign, and he also failed to declare the developer as a major conflict of interest (when motions about the developer’s DAs came before council).
In 2021, LattéLife’s sister publication, the Southern Highlands Express, took money from the same developer for a half page advertisement worth around $2000. This in itself is a major conflict.
The publishers of LattéLife and the Express are based in Sydney. All their journalists are based in Sydney. All their support staff are based in Sydney.
The only employees based in the Highlands are the advertising manager and the person who delivers the paper to retail outlets.
When businesses pay for advertising, that money ends up in Sydney.
When the employees are paid each week, most of that money ends up in Sydney.
The only wages earned in the Highlands are that of the person selling the advertising, the revenue of which, ends up paying the costs of the publication and the employees.
In Sydney.
In the lead up to the most important election in the history of the Wingecarribee Shire, do we really want to support a local paper that’s run by people in Sydney?
Do we really want the paper’s reporters to be based outside of our community?
And do we really want a media outlet that exposes developer shenanigans on the one hand, only to receive money from that same developer with the other?
At the moment, we’ve got more conflicts than you can poke a stick at …
… we certainly don’t need any Sydney based conflicts adding to the problem.
