Homoeopath couple challenge conviction for girl's death

Postby creampie » Thu Oct 14, 2010 7:08 pm

A couple who were found guilty of manslaughter after their baby died when she was treated with alternative medicine have launched an appeal against their conviction.

Gloria Thomas was nine months old when she died from complications that arose after an eye infection.

She had also suffered from the skin condition eczema, which doctors testified in court had weakened her immune system.

Her parents, Thomas and Manju Sam, were found guilty of manslaughter by gross criminal neglect.

In their trial, the jury heard they had abandoned conventional medicine in favour of homoeopathic remedies.

The couple are appealing against the findings of neglect in the New South Wales Supreme Court.

Their lawyer is arguing they were trying everything to find a cure for their daughter.

He said it was not open to the jury to find the couple deliberately neglected the health of their child
