The RSPCA is again calling for an end to jumps racing after a horse had to be put down following a jumps event at Mount Gambier in South Australia's south-east this afternoon.

The favourite, Fasilenko, fell during the open steeple race but jockey Stephen Gray was not injured.

The RSPCA's South Australian president Sheree Sellick says the incident highlights the need to ban jumps racing.

"The fact is that jumps racing is incredibly dangerous - far, far more dangerous than flat racing," she said.

"It's dangerous for both the horses and the riders and we call again on Thoroughbred Racing SA to drop jumps racing from the calendar straight away."

Earlier in the month, Ledgers Dream died after collapsing at a hurdle at Morphettville racecourse in Adelaide.
